Transformer Cooler Bank Replacement

As a cost effective alternative to buying a new unit; transformer cooler bank replacement is becoming increasingly popular. TP Power Services has the ability to design and supply a fully bespoke cooler bank replacement package that will increase the life of the transformer dramatically.

The transformers in service within the UK’s electrical generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure range from brand new units to units that were installed in the 1960’s.  Many of these older units are still in very good operating condition despite their age. However due to their design, the materials used, the paint work and poor maintenance; the cooler banks are often found to be in poor condition, often rusty and with oil leaks. Rather than replacing the entire transformer and cooler bank together it is becoming more common to replace the cooler bank, repair/refurbish and repaint the transformer in-situ to greatly extend the units operational life at a fraction of the cost of a new transformer.

There are various ways to approach replacing the cooler bank on a transformer. Depending on a customers wishes there are options to suit all range of requirements. If they wish to replace the whole cooling system and structure, we can design this to the exact specifications they desire. Should they wish for the most cost effective solution; the condition of each of the individual components can be assessed and  recommendations made based on this e.g. reuse of the existing pipework, modification of the existing support structures and fitting new radiators to the existing header sections. The cooler banks can be supplied in a variety of finishes from Galvanised to Marine Grade C5M paint finish in a selection of colours.

In addition to the cooler bank structures, pipework and cooling radiators we can also repair, refurbish and replace the isolation gate valves, oil pumps and axial cooling fans that are a part of the cooling system. As part of a replacement cooler bank system we can supply:

  • ‘A’ Frame or Box section support structures
  • Cooling radiators
  • Header sections
  • Blanking Plates
  • Butterfly valves
  • Axial cooling fans
  • Fan support frames
  • Anti-vibrational mounts
  • Transformer oil pumps
  • Pipework
