Retrofitting of IPB's at Peterborough Power Station

The removal, refitting and re-welding of three low Voltage IPB’s for Centrica had to be completed to allow the replacement of defective low voltage bushings within a 145MVA power transformer

Transformer Rewind for Corus / Quartzelec

When Corus’s 37.5MVA transformer broke down, TP Power Service was approached to do an inspection report following its de-commissioning and removal to our testing facilities in Rugby.

De-tanking Corus's 37.5MVA transformerUpon de-tanking and inspection of the core, a fault in the C phase had caused a number of windings to explode and its ultimate electrical breakdown. After testing, its cause was believed to be its constant operation above its nominal tapchanger setting to meet the plants power requirements, resulting in the significant reduction of working life and severe electrical breakdown.

Blown Transformer WindingsGiven the transformers unscheduled down time, TP Power is providing a premium turnaround service for the rewind of three HV windings, making the service more cost-effective by utilising the existing core and LV windings. The project schedule was shortened through a premium copper manufacturing and delivery service, 7 day winding service and double shift rotations; condensing the delivery, manufacture and testing time from 10 weeks to 6 weeks.

Given the transformer is 25 years old and arguably not sufficient for the plants power requirements, TP Power has been asked to quote for the manufacture of a similar 37.5MVA transformer but with uprated windings and tapchanger switches.

Project Update...

Corus's 37.5MVA core removal from ovenWithin 5 weeks of project confirmation, TP Power services is in the final stage of completing a rewind and refurbishment service for Corus's failed 37.5MVA transformer. The transformer core has been re-constructed, dried, tanked, filled with oil and tested, and is waiting to be hermetically sealed and for the tanks exterior to be refurbished and re-coated. In addition to the agreed workscope, TPPS are modernising the winding temperature indicator at Corus's request and are performing additional tests on all exterior control equipment and cables.
