International Consultation for Intergen

Rijnmond Energie project in the Netherlands, located in the Rotterdam Port area, achieved commercial operation in July 2004. The 820MW cogeneration plant supplies northwest Europe with electricity and Shell’s Pernis Refinery with Steam through the efficient operation of two natural gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine generator and three high voltage generator transformers.

Intergen's RijnmondThrough a personal recommendation, our head project engineer was contracted to be Intergen’s technical, mechanical and electrical consultant when a 310MVA, YNd1, oil-directed air-forced (ODAF) generator transformer significantly malfunctioned early in its working life. To complicate matters; differential MVA ratings and voltage applications compared to the other two transformers meant units were not interchangeable, leaving the only conceivable contingency plans those of substantial repair and maintenance, or replacement which would incur and 12 – 15 month lead time.

Physical inspections and third party testing provided data to identify potential causes, although the priority was to find the solution with the shortest lead time to minimise power outage losses. TP Power were further contracted to perform winding tests for frequency response, resistances, megger, capacities and power factor; where upon evaluation it was concluded that the unit should be transported back to its manufacturer who would complete a variety of substantial repairs.

TP Powers Services Ltd continues technical consultancy during repairs and will continue to support Intergen in the matter of investigating responsibility.
