E.ON invests in CHP......TPPS helps

Plans were confirmed in March 2007 that E.ON UK, the company behind Powergen, would be building a £500 million Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant on the Isle of Grain, where its current oil-fired plant is located, which is used infrequently and due to be decommissioned by 2015. The new CHP plant boasts to be one of the largest of its kind in the world and said to be a perfect example of E.ON's dedication to being 10% more efficient by 2012.

To be built under a turnkey contract by Alstom, the station will be powered by three high efficiency GT26 Alstom turbines with a total capacity of 1,275MW that will supply around 1 million homes in the area. E.ON have signed contracts with National Grid to supply 340MW of 'waste' heat to its £355 million LNG terminal currently under development. The combined cycle gas turbine power station will utilise its steam condensation process to send heated water directly to the LNG's vapourisers, saving a total of 350,000 tonnes of carbon doixide being released into the atmosphere and heated water into the Medway.

Work commenced at Grain in May 2007, with TPPS receiving confirmation of their successful tender in April 2009. The scope of works so far includes the installation of a 500MVA Generator Step-Up Transformer and 35MVA Service Station Transformer for each of the three turbine halls. With a number of tenders still awaiting confirmation, the project is still in line to become a major project for TPPS.

Updates coming soon...
